ABOUT ME >>

I started fishing when I was two years old when my mom took me to a local fishing derby. It rained for the whole six hours we were there but I still cried that is was over. My mom continued taking me to lakes, the derby, and once a year to the U.P of Michigan, my favorite spot to fish.  My love for fishing grew.

I am now 14 and I still go to my local fishing derby, lakes in Illinois and Michigan, and rivers in Wisconsin.  I have added salmon poles, ice fishing poles and homemade tip ups and just this year a fly rod and fly tying to my equipment.

Two years ago, my family and I went to a local fishing expo. While my brother, sister and I sat down to tie a fly, my mom talked with the volunteers from Trout Unlimited and discovered they had a fly fishing camp. I applied too late for the first year (plus I was technically a year too young). The next year I signed up early and was accepted to attend the camp. I had a rod from my grandpa and had been practicing casting in the snow on my driveway for weeks. A couple weeks before camp I did a 1 day fly fishing camp that showed me how to cast better, and they taught us fly tying.

I went to camp excited to fish, and came out having a lot more than a fishing experience. At camp I learned many things and realized that I want to spend my life working with fishing, the outdoors, conservation and more. After camp I found an old table vise in my garage, and made a bobbin with materials I found in my mom's crafts stuff. I made lots of flies with the table vise before I got my own fly tying kit and some basic materials. My mom and I just recently joined a fly tying club and I am working on improving my skills as a tyer.
